NORSKE SIDER


Background

This society exists as a forum and activity - Initiated by me in the winter of 1994, to serve as a place and context for discussions concerning Gnosticism. Then it held the cryptic name Societas Gnostica Norvegia, which was changed to The Gnostic Society in the Kingdom of Norway in 1999.
GSN were never meant to replace a communal or denominational activity, nor to disseminate a single and "unitary" doctrine of Gnosticism or anything else - just to provide a place and context where people enthused and inspired by the ancient Gnostics and their insight could meet.

We are not an affiliation for the Gnostic Society in Hollywood,Los Angeles, but I do feel we share a common aspiration towards a greater Understanding
of "gnosticism",the ancient gnostic traditions and the relevance of the Gnosis as a universal necessity for contemporary humankind.

I have been, as a private person, pariticipant in the Gnostic Ekklesia presently operating under the name Ecclesia Gnostica Norvegia for about 5 years now -and by kind provision of Revd. Jan Valentin Saether we have been allowed to use his Gnostic Center/Capella Santa Sophia for our meetings and lectures.

A Brief explanation of the concept Gnosis:


Gnosis - greek term, translated directly into "Knowledge".
In context with the Western traditions of Gnostic philosophy and mystagogy, it implies a personal and intimate "knowing" or acquaintance with existing things), which in turn imparts a salvation or liberation from Ignorance and Illusion. The Gnostic mystical paradigms as they are found within and on the periphery of Christianity, have, a series of scholars in the field of comparative religion have contended; corollaries in the Vedantine and Buddhist Jnana, the `ilm, irfahat and Marifaat of Islam and many other religious and philosophical traditions and their respective cultures. Vision, Revelation, Myth in its formative stages, ecstacy, trance and to a certain extent intuition - are all under the dominion of Gnosis since all these share the common characteristic of mediating an "intimate knowing of existing things" from a transcendent, hidden or subtle source, which traditional religious terminology calls Divine.

The plural of Gnosis - only necessary if we deal with distinct expressions and contexts - is sometimes referred to as Gnoses.

Please be informed that we do not currently have any Meetings or lectures scheduled, it might take some time before anything can be organized.
