Dusty old scraps..which would change your Bible forever..If anybody cared

Oooops.. which Matthew is Matthew??

Panteneus, the famous early second century teacher of the first Cathetical collegium in Alexandria, found it necessary to follow the silk road to India in order to find a original copy of the original Gospel according to Matthew.
Panteneus were the teacher of Clement of Alexandria the churchfather and among the greater inspirators of both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox traditions. The time of his travel to India is unclear, but the timeline stretches from 120 at earliest and about 145CE at latest, since he is heard of as having taught at the Cathetical collegium to his last days.
After registering the fact about his voyage, I concluded from the sources I had at hand that – Nothing is heard about a: whether his quest were a success, though it appears to me that the Oriental thought he did. b: whether or not the gospel version in question differs from what the Western church had at that time, or whether indeed it differs from the one version we have and read today. Having read about the adventures of Panteneus to the East to secure a manuscript of an original gospel, I was reminded of James Bruce`s quest to Egypt in order to secure a copy of the famous Secret Book of Enoch – instead of that, by chance, he discovered an ancient codex book containing a cryptic and not before heard about collection of texts, The Books of Ieou – or the books of the saviour, written by an obscure Gnostic sect. Recounting the “exact structure of the treasuries of light” and the secret baptism which Jesus gave his disciples when he returned after his ascent into heaven. As I have already mentioned there is little to be had of information about this curious campaign in the history of the Church, considering how much emphasis some scholars and theologians have had on the primacy of the Gospel according to Matthew (in the sense of it being first) – it stands out as a kind of Quest for the Holy Grail. Much the pity we hear nothing more about it from the encyclopedias, dictionaries, from books on “Biblical Archeology” and so forth.

Browsing around today at the Schoeyen Collection of the Norwegian Institute of Palaeography and Historical Philology… I happened upon this description for a Coptic manuscript fragment in the collection :

BIBLE: MATTHEW
MS in Mesokemic (Middle Egyptian or Oxyrhynchite dialect) on papyrus, Oxyrhynchus region, Egypt, 1st half of 4th c., 39 ff. (- ca. 6 ff.), 23×20 cm, single column, (18×14-16 cm), 25-28 lines in a fine regular Coptic uncial.

Context: MSS 2648, 2649, 2651 and 14 ff. of Isaiah (in Mesokemic, ca. 300) were found tipped in among the leaves of the present codex, which originally had ca. 45 ff. Probably from the same hoard as the Chester Beatty papyri, now in Dublin: Chester Beatty Library.

Provenance: 1. Monastery in the Oxyrhynchus region, Egypt (4th c. – ca. 1930); 2. Antiquity dealer, Alexandria (ca. 1930); 3. Private collector, Zürich.

Commentary: The text opens at ch. 5:38 and goes more or less continuously to the end.

The present codex is the earliest Matthew in any Coptic dialect. The 11 chapters, 6-9, 13-17, 22 and 28, and a great number of verses elsewhere, are in addition the earliest witnesses to these parts of the Bible. The text is unique, not following any Coptic nor Greek manuscripts known of Matthew.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Martin Schenke in his editio princeps of the text, has named the manuscript Codex Schøyen, with the siglum Mae 2. (siglum Mae 1 being the Scheide Codex of 5th c.) His conclusions are that the text is not representing a free text transmission in relation to all the other extant Greek and Coptic manuscripts of Matthew, but that it is a correct translation of an entirely different Gospel of Matthew. There is only one other Gospel of Matthew known, the lost Hebrew Gospel of the Jewish Christians mentioned by the church fathers. This would have been the Hebrew exemplar of the Greek translation the present manuscript is based upon. Actually the famous statement by Papias that the Hebrew Gospel of Matthew was translated into Greek several times (Eusebius, hist. eccl. III, 39, 16), now come in a new light. Due to a series of textual differences between Codex Schøyen and the Canonical Gospel, it appears that both Gospels derive from different versions of the Hebrew Matthew. The consequence is that the relationship among the Synoptic Gospels has to be entirely re-evaluated, causing far-reaching and dramatic consequences for New Testament research.

Published: Hans-Martin Schenke in the series Manuscripts in The Schøyen Collection, ed. Jens Braarvig; Coptic Papyri, vol. I. Oslo 2001

The example of Pantaneus, and to a certain extent also Papias, both early 2nd century Churchfathers – gives us occasion to wonder whether or not originally there existed one authentic Gospel according to Matthew.. and the one we`ve got today, no matter how much we like and love it, is a later much edited and doctored recension.. and that we cannot (still) know where it is silenced, and where it is silent itself. Dr. Hans-Martin Schenke is right in observing that this may cause far-reaching and dramatic consequences for New Testament research. The majority of biblical scholars agree on the “primacy” of the Gospel according to Matthew per se , and this means that it is the priority of most theologians to look first at Matthew and then compare between the others. Apparently, this is now a bit more complicated – which Matthew is Matthew? Which Book really has primacy?
While Eusebius reports there are several original translations of the original Hebrew Gospel according to Matthew – more or less observing the industry and dynamis of the first Christian communities scribes, he never gives us an inch on how it is determined that the Gospel according to Matthew on the cutting table of the Canonical Synod at Nicaea qualifies as authentic or true, or even originating from one of several Greek versions (not only translations, as we now have found) of the original Hebrew Gospel. What he gives us is assurance that the Gospel of Matthew, or rather a Gospel of Matthew – where among the gospels chosen as authentic and canonical by the Roman Church.

More Gnostic Weblogs

I just recently discovered that the creator of the GFN,Reverend Illuminatus Maximus has a site-topic oriented weblog

Alex Guldbeck is a professional graphic designer who for the last four years have been hosting, moderating and producing an internet site named The Gnostic Friends Network under the name domain www.enemies.com. On and off we have had more or less pleasant and rewarding conversation for almost as long a period. Alex used to be quite active in the Usenet groups, something I suppose I left on the shelves already in 1997. I think I should admit that initially I werent too appreciative of what Alex were trying to do; to me the outputs and exhibits in his Metaphysical Freak Show represented ugly carricatures of the aesthetic I myself experienced in relation to Gnostic Myth. Eventually I suppose I have come half-way round in admitting that Myth address a very subjective mode of our thinking and feeling, and therefore whereas themes might be universal – their reception, their interpretation is quite specific.

I`ll be following his journal and see what impressions and thoughts he feels fit to vent on the rest of us…

New Books on the Gnosis

New Books on the theme of Gnosticism:

Elaine Pagels, the author of one of the most popular accounts on the ancient gnostics;
The Gnostic Gospels have recently published a brand new book,
Beyond Belief:The Secret Gospel of Thomas.

Around the same time, Karen L.King has published what might be yet another primer (introduction) to the phenomenon of ancient Gnosticism; What is Gnosticism?.

Other Books

Kurt Rudolph:

Gnosis:The Nature and History of Gnosticism. An almost encyclopedic account of the Nature and History

of Gnosticism. Like Elaine Pagel`s The Gnostic Gospels, it is fair to say that it is a popularizing and easily accessible book about

the Gnostics, somewhat fuller in detail. Detail and breadth which this book offers us, isn`t everything.

Stephan Hoeller, who just happens to be the Bishop of Ecclesia Gnostica, a contemporary Gnostic Christian denomination, have also let publish another book during 2002, so it is relatively “recent”,Gnosticism: New Light on the Ancient Tradition of Inner Knowing All, in all – there`s three books I feel obliged to read this coming summer.

More on the Matrix

It`s almost been a year since I put a little post up about Matrix and the conclusions and theories a lot of people put up about its mythology.

Star Wars director and creator George Lucas, as some of us know, were a student under Joseph Campbell, the famous comparative mythologist…he appears to have learnt from Campbell that all the good stories have already been told, all we can do is piece the component parts of these stories into new tapestries and stories. Since the 19th century and the influx of both romanticism, which re-examined and re-invented the golden age of the late antiquity religions, cosmologies and mysteries – and Orientalism, which did much the same with the oriental and asian religions and philosophical systems – our culture has appreciated, again, Mythologies and Legends as having religious significance, in addition to the historical and literary significance which were accorded it prior to this. The Gothic Novel, the Romance Novel and eventually the first movies – borrowed themes from such Mythology and fed these back to us, some of the most beloved of fictions were believed to be true, albeit in a more subtle way, many generations before.

George Lucas sure as hell is no Guru or spiritual advisor, nor should he arrogate to himself the role of an educator…I do not suspect him of this either, but the situation with Lucas is much like the situation with the Wachowski brothers and their prodigy – The Matrix – as has been tirelessly observed by Science Fiction afficinados, the suggestions made in The Matrix reflects a developement within the Genre, informed and increased by writers such as Philip K. Dick whose stories inspired among other cinematic fantasies the cult movie Blade Runner and subsequently a whole genre of movies with an Dystopic (the dark, caustic and apocalyptic counterpart to sunshine Utopia) theme. Fantasy and Science Fiction are genres which freely and sincerely mixes the components of our cultures – be it religion, myth, dreams, gods and technology.. the most mythomanic of these, as have been demonstrated by mythologists production of literary output in this genre, is of course the Fantasy genre, the stories told at the twilight, or while immersed in the dream-like atmosphere of “another world”.

There is a lot of Blade Runner in Matrix, a lot of other earlier fantasies of being immersed in an “almost reality”, part of the thrill being introduced to riddles about the fabric and constitution of “our world” which have been shared, perhaps candidly, between thinking men and women from the days humanity began walking upright, or even before that.

First and foremost The Matrix is a high-tech Visual and Aesthetic experience – a demonstration of the suggestive and alluring spin technology has for us; recently there was a Mobile Network breakdown in this city and the entire population saw demonstrated how helplessly and pathetically dependent they had become of the little gizmo that enables wireless transfer of data: be it a conversation by voice, by SMS or by computer… if you think a little further you will find how radio communication, the transfer of millions of unobtrusive and invisible signals…has become the infrastructure of our cities “lives”..does not our lifestyles and our homes come to resemble more and more like a Cocoon?

And if we are swaddled up in a cocoon, what will crawl or fall out of it once it bursts? Neo erupts out of a cocoon in the first installment of The Matrix, this theme of humans being batteries for technology, or the providers of necessary things are outline in Jean-Luc Godard`s paranoid noir movie Alphaville already in 1965, and before him in Fritz Lang`s Metropolis, also it features in Dark City.. which even features the chanting of “Go Back to Sleep” from the monstrous chief-computer`s droning voice..and the hero of that movie discovers finally that his world is not real, but a fabricated illusion as well… Could it be our dear Wachowski brothers aren`t that refined.. that they are feeding us bits and pieces of our own mythology, from the dreamworlds of our pulp fiction novels,Sci-Fi magazines, Twilight Zone on TV and a plethora of movies.. that this is the reason we recognize themes from exotically oriental metaphysics to recognizable “Biblical” themes, is that this compartment of our culture has been recycling the ancient myths again and again…?

At the time I write this, my dear friends, I have still not seen the second installment of the series; Matrix:Reloaded, I might go this weekend ..

The Journal of Religion&Film have put online a new article on the phenomenon of the Matrix(es) : Reassessing Matrix/Reloaded by Julien R.Fielding – I think I will leave it for a better study after I have seen the wildly popular sequel.. but thought I`d share it with those of you who have…

Meeting the Great Tit

A Great Tit landed on my hand and began feeding on my lunch…

I hope this makes sense to some of my readers. Or else I will

have to explain (sigh) – The Great Tit is a bird of the Parinae family,

its Latin species name being Parus Major. It is a very common bird in

the garden and everyplace else for that matter. It is black, white, blue

and yellow.. Why am I writing about this? Well, I did expect it at all, I`ve seen birds feeding from peoples hands, but it always appeared to me to be orchestrated and strained. This encounter weren`t like that at all. It appeared to me that the bird was as much sharing my lunch, as investigating this strange fellow sitting on a bench in the park. I have begun to eat my lunch in the outdoors occasionally, having the great fortune to be able to work inside the area of the Botanical Garden in Oslo…something I am beginning to appreciate more and more.

Egypt bans Matrix Reloaded

This bit was actually reported on Ananova:

Egyptian censors has decided to ban The Matrix Reloaded on religious grounds because it is too violent….

Fine..well, Egypt doesnt “get” heavy metal groups like Sepultura neither, believing it to be satanic.. but these religious grounds on account of violence.. appears to address what Questions Matrix asks concerning existence and the world… because further in this report we find vocalized a very, to Gnostics, recognizeable argument:

The committee said: “Despite the high technology and fabulous effects of the movie, it explicitly handles the issue of existence and creation, which are related to the three divine religions, which we all respect and believe in”.

The movie “tackles the issue of the creator and his creations, searching the origin of creation and the issue of compulsion and free will”, the committee said.

It added that “such religious issues, raised in previous times, caused crises”.

The statement says violent scenes in the movie also played a role in the decision to ban it.

Screening the movie may cause troubles and harm social peace,” the statement said.

Can you smell that tar-like odour? It`s the Library of Alexandria burning.. across 1300 years. That bacon-fry smoky funk? It`s heretics and rebels and sorcerors and storytellers on the pyre…

Im exaggerating? Of course, this is a wonderful exercise in “ecumenical diplomacy” – last time around they wanted to ban and actually burn the reels of the first film in the sequel because it supposedly promoted “Zionism” (seen the movie? The city of the rebels were called Zion…Zion=Zionism.. funny)..

Now they want to ban it because it overtly promotes….Gnosticism? If so..of course it is quite controversial to the Islamo-Christian-Jewish people of Egypt…perhaps they wouldnt want to be exposed to these questions?
On the other hand: How on earth can they possibly avoid them?
